Case Study: Walden University emphasizes a comprehensive understanding of both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, ensuring doctoral students are well-prepared for their scholarly endeavors. Reflecting upon the course journey, I am prepared to move forward through the doctoral capstone process. All in all, the instruction from the qualitative and quantitative research course has profoundly impacted my perspective on the doctoral research process. For instance, understanding the nuanced differences between research methodologies, research designs, and data collection approaches will guide my choices in my DBA capstone study (Walden University Office of Research and Doctoral Services, n.d.). With resources like the DBA capstone studies guide, I have also gained an integrated understanding of how these research approaches apply specifically to business disciplines (Walden University Office of Research and Doctoral Services, n.d.).
Despite the robust training in this course, I still have areas that require further attention. I can sharpen my proficiency in APA writing, as I occasionally struggle with appropriate in-text citation and formatting. Furthermore, while I have a foundational grasp of the literature review process, honing my ability to critically synthesize articles will enhance the depth of my capstone. The MEAL plan, which stands for Main idea, Evidence, Analysis, and Lead out, has been a beneficial tool for structuring paragraphs, but consistency in its application is an area for improvement. Lastly, my proficiency in navigating the Walden University Library and utilizing resources such as the DBA capstone studies could be strengthened, particularly in efficiently locating peer-reviewed articles that are most relevant to my research.
The emphasis of Walden University on promoting positive social change has been a recurring theme throughout my DBA program thus far. With an enriched understanding of research methodologies, I am more adept at identifying societal challenges that can be addressed through scholarly inquiry. For instance, grounded theory could be employed to explore the experiences of minority communities, leading to potential policy changes or community interventions that uplift their living conditions.
This has been a great course. I appreciate Dr. Grant's timely feedback and her concern for doctoral students to speak the "language of scholars." Doctoral students are expected to use the "language of scholars" as it represents a level of precision, rigor, and professionalism required for advanced academic and research pursuits. Engaging with scholarly discourse not only ensures clarity in communication but also situates our work within the broader context of academic traditions and debates (Creswell, 2014). Furthermore, by mastering this specialized language, doctoral students can demonstrate their deep understanding of the concepts, methodologies, and theoretical frameworks relevant to their field. This proficiency not only aids in the dissemination of research findings but also ensures the credibility and validity of their work, fostering meaningful dialogues within the academic community (Saunders et al., 2019).
