Question: So many critical issues to explore in our world today! Let's look at the impact of the opioid crisis on communities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the total "economic burden" of prescription opioid misuse in the United States is $78.5 billion a year, including the costs of healthcare, lost productivity, addiction treatment, and criminal justice involvement (as cited by National Institute of Drug Abuse, 2018). This does not include the costs related to non-prescription misuse such as heroin, meth, and synthetic fentanyl. We can also start addressing the increased mortality involved in opioid misuse. When we start looking at population health, we look at issue that impact groups of people. We need to understand the factors that surround the issue. By knowing and understanding these factors, we can implement policy changes and programs to address specific needs and thereby decrease incidence and prevalence.
