The Indigenous people have long suffered extensive oppression since the arrival of European settlers. They have endured mass genocide, forced assimilation and tribal land has been exploited for resources (timber, oil, mining etc.) by the government. Children were forcibly removed and sent to "boarding schools." Many children in these schools died or were horrifically abused. Native language, traditions and customs have been lost and families were torn apart. Stereotypes have further subjected the Indigenous people to more harm and exploitation while reinforcing the misperceptions of the Indigenous culture and traditions.
