Question: The creative set design of this musical really showed the creative production, while adding to the effect of its intimacy. The set was simple, every prop had a purpose and was utilized creatively from scene to scene. Since the light designs and screen projections were so complicated, it was smart to keep the props and setting simple. For instance, when Anastasiawas on the chair in her flashbacks with her grandma, they always used the same prop for that scene. So, when that prop came out, it created a notion that there was going to be some integral moment occurring and that Anastasia was slowly gaining her memory. The simplicity of both chairs on stage set a sense of familiarity and home. It's the piece that Anastasia can remember most and sets up the reunion of her grandma later in the musical. Since the audience has grown a correlation with this prop, we know what to expect from the scenes the prop appears in and it makes each of those scenes that much more special.
