A patient presents to the clinic for a follow-up after being treated in the local ER for acute coronary syndrome three-months ago. At that time the patient underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with the placement of a drug-eluting stent and was started on clopidogrel (Plavix) 75mg daily which he has taken since. Which education would be needed when the patient indicates he is planning to stop taking the clopidogrel? Stop the Plavix immediately as this is not indicated after stent placement Plavix needs to be continued for a minimum of 9 to 12 months after PCI Plavix therapy can be stopped once you are no longer having anginal episodes Plavix therapy should not be stopped, but should be taken with Prilosec to prevent an ulcer.
