Question

A star named Astrix is observed to have planets. You are interested in finding out if these planets may be suitable for life. Astrix is a 2 solar mass star. Its luminosity 8.5 times that of the Sun and you can calculate its radius from the StefanBoltzmann formula showed in class, knowing also that its surface temperature is about 8500K. One of the planets you observe is found by the transit method. The flux from the star dips at a level 10^-4 (that is 1/10,000) times lower than its normal level. You wait to observe a second transit, and it happens after 4.5 years. Do you think that such planet may be suitable for life as we know it on our planet? Assume that the greenhouse effect may range between 10 K to 70 K as the C-cycle tries to keep the actual surface temperature of the planet in equilibrium (see C-cycle).

To calculate temperature, you can use the albedo of Earth, A=0.33.
