Jennifer is a 46-year-old woman who comes to the emergency room complaining of painful swelling, drainage, and redness in her left hand over the past two weeks. To obtain a thorough history, the ER doctor learned that she spends a lot of time outdoors working on her garden and she had a "pretty nasty" mosquito bite on the top of her left hand before the swelling started, which was about two weeks ago. After five days of increased swelling and redness, she went to her doctor and received a topical steroid cream. She was told that it was probably a mild irritation from insect bite and the medication will help with the swelling and redness. Now, she presents to the ER because her hand is increasingly painful, tight, and is more swollen, and the drainage has worsened. She noticed she felt chills and took her temperature at home to discover that she has a fever of 39.4°C which is what prompted her to come to the ER.
