Question

In my outpatient clinic, we teach pelvic floor activation (Kegels) to improve TrA activation for improved lumbopelvic stability. Many patients improved just with this cueing and education, but for those who do not, we partner with a pelvic floor clinic around the corner and refer them for internal pelvic floor PT and biofeedback as deemed necessary by their staff. In our past patient pool, we had a few post-pregnancy women who were referred for low back pain but upon evaluation by the PT explained that they were experiencing some leakage but expected it to be a part of postpartum. Following education and a few sessions of motor recruitment and strengthening, they reported that the addition of the Kegel to their daily activities has decreased their occurrence of leakage much more than they anticipated. More than anything I feel that this is due to a lack of education and training for postpartum recovery.
