The medium choice I chose for this discussion is Tempera. Tempra, as described in the textbook, is an aqueous medium similar to watercolor that dries into a rugged, insoluble film. Tempra paintings are long-lasting, and their color retains their brilliance and clarity for centuries. Tempera is an emulsion paint that is a stable mixture of an aqueous liquid with oil, fat, wax, or resin (Getlein,2020, pp.163). Colors cannot be blended easily once they're set due to Tempera drying so quickly. The artwork that I chose is Maesta By Duccio di Buoninsegna. Duccio uses Tempera and Gold on wood to make this piece of art. Duccio was known for his religious art during the Renaissance. The Maesta portrayed exactly that and was an altarpiece. This altarpiece expressed the gospel, Christ, and the Virgin Mary. This piece of art was designed for devout contemplation and added the Virgin and Child in majesty. They are both surrounded by a host of angels and saints. The most important figures, such as the Virgin and Christ, are created larger due to more significance than the lesser ones, the saints. Tempra paintings were typical during the Renaissance, which is why Duccio used this form of medium. Until around the 15th century, oil paint had eclipsed Tempera as a medium of choice.
