As you consider an example from your work experience, think about what determines the willingness of the individual to work hard? According to Vroom’s Expectancy Theory, setting the goal alone will not motivate the worker. There must be three thresholds to consider. One factor is expectancy; that is, the effort will produce the result expected (perceived effort-performance relationship). Another factor is instrumentality; this is where the worker believes rewards will come with the performance (performance-outcome). The last factor is valence; the individual values the reward being offered). Can you relate to Vroom's theory? Has there been situations where the company valued the reward, but you did not (valence was missing)?
