Suggest a third Social Science Discipline that can help this paper. Why do you think this social science discipline would have also worked in gaining a better understanding of this topic.
The topic I chose for my final project was access to robust health in the United States. My paper reviewed several studies and used economics and cultural anthropology to analyze why health is strongly correlated with financial wealth.
Economics: I reviewed my main points (access to healthy food, paid sick leave, and children's access to transportation to physical activities) from the lens of the social science of economics. This is a much more complex topic than asking our most disadvantaged citizens to pull themselves up my their bootstraps and get better jobs. Often, a person's income is tied with their education, and a person is more likely to have an advanced education if their parents did. In turn, they have better occupations that pay more, they have access to paid sick leave, and this allows them time off for things like preventative care and healing if they are sick or injured. They also have the time, money, and access to transportation to take their children to physical after-school activities such as sports.
I also reviewed this topic from the social lens of Cultural Anthropology, which you will see from the last paragraph intersects with economics. The issue is systemic-the more money one's parents had, the more likely it is they will have fine educations. The better their education, the better their occupation. The better their occupation, the more money they have. The opposite is shown in our citizens who have not had these same benefits: if they are able to work, they work one or even two minimum wage jobs to keep the lights on and their families fed, they cannot afford to send their children to college, and then their children either must go into debt to get themselves educated or go directly into the work force, accepting occupations that do not require an education, often ending up with less pay and no benefits.
Both of these social sciences can be used to review and help find solutions for these issues on a national level. Because monetary wealth is so closely correlated to health, federal and state-level policies can be put in place to help patch the cracks in our system.
