There is a lot of interest in using gene therapy to treat many different types of diseases. Currently, many diseases and disorders can be treated with drugs or therapies. But these generally target the symptoms and often do not address the cause of the disorder.
With genetic disorders, such as cystic fibrosis, gene therapy offers an exciting new approach. Changing the DNA instructions inside a patient's cells could offer patients a permanent cure, or at least a way to permanently stop many of the symptoms. This would allow people to lead healthier lives with fewer treatments.
As with all therapies, there is the potential for undesirable side effects. And, if the person's DNA is changed, it may be possible for these changes to be passed down to their children. With traditional medical therapies, the patient can choose to accept or not accept a certain treatment, based on the benefits and side effects. With gene therapy, it could be that future generations will have to live with any potential consequences or side effects of the therapy but have no chance to give their consent.
Do you think gene therapy is or is not an acceptable type of therapy for genetic disorders? Would they be more acceptable if they were done in a way that couldn't be inherited? Explain your opinion.
