The ‘Start-up Statics UK 2020' article contains a lot of information about start- up businesses in the UK. They use information from the UK Government's website to illustrate statistics for Small Businesses within the UK. There are three important factors for you to consider:
1. 672,890 new business start-ups were registered in the UK by April 2019.
2. 57.6% of businesses that were start-ups in 2013 were gone by 2018.
3. 11% of business start-ups from 2017 were gone by 2018.
These statistics illustrate how difficult it can be to launch a start-up business within the UK. It also suggests that over half of businesses do not survive past five years. However, it does not explain why this happens or what businesses can do to increase their success rates.
For your assignment you are required to:
1. Choose a country, county, and/or industry in which to study business start-ups in more detail.
• This can be as specific or general as needed, if you have enough to write about.
2. Report and analyse the statistics for that chosen area of study.
• Statistics can be taken from any reliable source and must be referenced.
• Statistics must include:
i. Number of start-ups.
ii. Number of business that have closed.
iii. Time frames for businesses.
iv. Reasons for businesses closing - usually these will be in a pie chart or referenced as percentages.
v. Own analysis and evaluation of these statistics
3. Critically evaluate the potential causes for businesses to succeed or fail in relation to your chosen country, county and/or industry.
• There should be an equal balance of success factors and causes of failure in
business.
• Discussion and evaluation on how to correct failures in business can be part of your success factors.
• Focus should be on the most common/important factors, not all possible factors.
