Scenario: You have been in a committed relationship (married or co-habitating) for 15 years. Your partner (spouse or life partner) was in a car accident about 2 weeks ago and is on a ventilator. The physician informs you that your partner will never regain consciousness. He/she will never breathe independently, wake up, talk, walk, any of the things that most healthy adults are able to do. More urgently, your partner needs a feeding tube to continue to receive nutrition. He/she needs to be moved out of the hospital soon, as the insurance will no longer cover the cost. You are the health care power of attorney for your partner.
