Question

As you will recall from Unit III, you learned about vulnerable populations, risk factors, and extreme reactions. After reviewing the required unit resources from Units III and IV, consider disasters over a 10-year period, either in your local community or from any other location.

Select two disasters-one that has occurred within the last 10 years and one that has occurred in the past 2 years. Then, compose a paper that addresses the information below.

Identify each disaster, and provide some detail about what occurred in each. Discuss the vulnerable populations in each of the disasters, and compare and contrast the impact they endured during the events.

Analyze the response efforts used in each of the events.

Were they successful?

Did we evolve in our response actions after the first event and learn any new best practices that may have been used in the more recent event? If not, should we have done this?

Did the disasters have any public health or long-term healthcare impacts? Should emergency managers have addressed any long-term health impacts in any of the impacted groups? How?

Finally, did the emergency managers in either of the events involve the public in any of the preparedness or response actions taken? If not, what should they have done?

Consider possible future disaster events that may have an impact on your community, and discuss how lessons learned from these events may assist you in developing mitigation strategies for providing a message to the public in your area to reduce vulnerabilities.
