As you have probably already learned in this course, in public health we talk about three different levels of prevention: primary (acting on risk factors for disease, before disease develops), secondary (intervening at a preclinical stage of the disease, in a manner that affects the course of disease) and tertiary (limiting the effects of clinical disease, in terms of disability and/or premature death). Asthma and COPD have some characteristics in common as well as some important differences. These common and distinct characteristics are likely to affect the types of prevention strategies that public health agencies can develop to manage the burden of these two diseases. In just few sentences, summarize what is common and what is different between the two diseases in terms of preventive approaches.
