Question

What are some concerns about the use of CRISPR in gene editing? Could we potentially use CRISPR to protect our native plants and animals from invasive species with adaptive traits? Yes we could, according to the article Gene Drives for Invasive Wasp Control, gene drives are proposed to control pests like common wasps by targeting their reproductive genes. By inactivating certain genes, infertile males can be produced, leading to failed nests. This method is similar to strategies used for mosquito control. The gene drive can be passed on through genetically modified queens mating with wild-type males. Other gene targets could also be suitable for pest control in wasps (Philip J. Lester et al., 2023).
