Background Information
Have you ever been overlooked for a promotion or not been offered a job or position even though you thought you were the better candidate? Have you ever not made the team or been selected last on the field because no one thought you could play or perform? Have you ever longed to be asked out on a date or have someone say yes to your offer of a date only to have them not be interested? If so, then you know the pain of not being chosen and the feeling of rejection that follows. Being chosen makes us feel we have value, are worthwhile, are special or have something to offer. But, most of all, being chosen means that we are wanted, desired or cherished.
The amazing thing about being chosen by God is that we have nothing to offer him in return. He does not choose us for our strength, abilities, looks, skills, or goodness but simply for who we are. He wants us for us, not for what we can do for him. Being wanted just for who we are is what we all long for.
The Bible says you are chosen by God. You were not an afterthought. God did not take you in because you were all that was left or because he felt guilty or obligated. He chose you. He wants you. He had you in mind before the creation of the world. He knew you when you were still in your mother's womb and was dreaming about his plans for you and how wonderful it would be to know you. He knows your name and chose you to be his. He cherishes you so much he has written your name on his hand so that you are always before him, vowing never to forget you. And because God is the one who did the choosing, nothing can take you away from him, diminish your status or separate you from his love.
When you feel discouraged or overwhelmed or that the world hates you like it hated Jesus as he says it sometimes will, ask God to remind you that you are chosen, just for being you.
Questions
1. We sometimes hear about the importance of self-image or self-worth and want to help others improve it. What is the difference between having a positive image or worth that comes from our experiences, status, or history in the world versus that which comes from being chosen by and belonging to God? Explain.
2. Explain a time or place when you felt most chosen or wanted. What happened? Why did you feel this way? How can you draw on this experience to remind you of how God feels about you in the same way.
