Your ankle and knee joints are made more stable by your fibula. The bulky bone that lies between your knee and ankle is called your tibia. The middle of such bone is called the shaft. Although they are not necessarily related, fibula fractures are frequently seen in tibial shaft fractures.

Surgery is typically required to cure a left tibia with a healed midshaft fracture. Most midshaft fractures are treated surgically by orthopedic surgeons, who insert a metal rod down the bone's shaft. Plate and screw structures or other types of fixations may be required for more complicated fractures or fractures close to the knee or ankle.
