The PLA is an individual assignment that tasks you with applying theories, typologies, or concepts covered in class to a real-world scenario. Effectively, I'm asking you to build your own mini-case study. I would like you to select your "scenario" from the popular business press. I suggest you look for an article, or series of articles, that focus on a leadership story, e.g. the success of an individual on a specific project, or the stumble and recovery of a team in a specific situation. Avoid broad scenarios, like the success of Space-X, and instead, focus on a specific scenario like the Space X's team's initial failure to land a reusable rocket. Keep in mind that this class is about leadership and team building. Popular Press Scenarios about leadership and team building are abundant in publications like Business Week, Fortune, Forbes, and Wall Street Journal, but can also be found in numerous other publications. Once you've identified your scenario or story, I want you to carefully analyze the details and apply at least three concepts, theories, or models we have covered this semester. Who was/were the leader(s)? How did they employ emotional Intelligence, motivation, values, communication, conflict management, power bases, performance management, team building, or avoid team dysfunctions? Look ahead to future course topics in the syllabus and learning objectives. You don't need to be overly concerned with future modules' details. I'd rather you focus on finding an interesting and sufficiently documented scenario to analyze. I also don't want you to try and eat an elephant. Applying a few topics thoroughly with strong analysis and evidence and a few high-level connections to other concepts is better than broadly addressing many topics.
When looking for an interesting scenario, consider articles about influential business leaders or government officials, or articles about key achievements, new ideas, innovative solutions to challenging problems. Many of the situations and dynamics described in the press can be explained or described using the theoretical concepts we cover in class. Your task is to choose an article(s) that describes an appropriate business situation or scenario in enough detail to allow critical analysis. Then you will do a four to five-page paper that applies the theoretical constructs learned in the course modules.
