Question 1
Chapter 7, about inequalities in law and justice.
What was the one-drop rule? How did it concentrate advantage (socially, sexually, legally, and economically) for whites in the United States?
And further, how did the tolerance of white men's miscegenation differ from treatment of Black men's sexual interaction with white women?
Question 2
We have talked in this class about how race and class have traditionally been linked, so it's hard to see which variable is the real cause for denial of equal rights in institutions, and we recognize at its core that it is probably a combination of both.
How do race and class affect one's chances of a fair shake in the criminal justice system? In your answer you could address:
--racial profiling, by the public, police, jury, and prison system
--the issue of police brutality and disproportionate killing of minorities by law enforcement
--class and the ability to buy yourself a fair trial
--disproportionate application of the death penalty
--white collar crime vs. street crime, and disproportionate punishment
--the "coloring" of gangs and drugs in the U.S.
