Topic - Alzheimer's Disease Sally is 35. She is concerned about her mother's mental functioning. Her mother is 59 and has started to lose her memory. Mom forgot where she parked her car when she drove into town to shop, and she became so confused and distressed, she ended up asking a storekeeper to call her a cab to bring her home. Mom has also forgotten some simple things she learned relatively recently, like going online to pay her bills and balance her checkbook.
1. Is this a typical presentation for Alzheimer's Disease?
2. What is Sally's approximate risk for the disease if her mother "gets the diagnosis." No one else in her family suffered from dementia. Her father died of an early heart attack (age 58), and his side of the family has "lots of heart disease." Her paternal grandmother suffered a stroke at 68 and lived for many years confined to a wheelchair, and she required home health care.
3. Sally is wondering if her mom is a candidate for some of the new drugs approved for Alzheimer Disease? Talk to Sally about these medications. Listed below are links to information about several new medications: Aduhelm Leqembi.
