A social media policy is a code of conduct for employees who make online postings because of their job or because of a personal brand. It sets standards for the employee’s use of social media. SMPs have two chief goals:

To educate employees about appropriate and inappropriate online behavior, related to their jobs and to the company

To protect employers from legal liabilities or a potential social media public relations crisis
