The film that I chose that has won "Best Picture" at the Oscars ceremony is 12 years a slave in 2014. The movie is about an African American man named Solomon Northup that has ups and downs that show his fight through the adversity of slavery. He is hired by two men for a two-week tour in Washington with their theatrical company. He was an African-American musician from New York and was a free man until he was kidnapped in Washington, D.C., and sold into slavery. The movie is based on a true story that came from an 1853 memoir by Solomon Northup.
It's a film that exudes all of the dignity, impatience, and artistic fidelity of its director. The rawness of the film and personal connection that the viewers gain from watching the 12-year struggle of Solomon Northup is one of a kind type of film. It is perfectly cast and paced, endlessly surprising, uncompromising, and compassionate. It never descends into cliche or even self-pity it remains a film for all, uninterested in anything but the truth of the oppression.
12 Years a Slave earned $187.7 million, including $56.7 million in the United States. The film was revolutionary with its directing and choice of speed and pace in the film. It was an amazing showing of what it was like to be Solomon Northup in a time of slavery and oppression.
It gave viewers a front-row seat to the terrible conditions that African Americans had to live through as well. I chose the film because I remember watching it and the feelings that the film brought to me. The film is well deserving of an oscar and if you have not watched the film it is a great watch and a film that many can learn from.
