Assessment 1 - International Business Plan Proposal & Presentation
ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION
You need to undertake an international business plan project throughout the semester. This assignment is to facilitate you in achieving unit learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7. The international business plan project will be undertaken in a group of 3-5.
In the first four weeks, you will negotiate with other students in the same class to form a team based on common interest. The team need to select a team leader, who will inform the Class Tutor (see page 6 for contact detail of your Class Tutor) of the name and student ID of the team members no later than Friday, Week 3, 11pm. The team leader liaises with team members to organize team meetings for the international business plan project. The Class Tutor and Unit Coordinator may restructure the groupings or makes alternative arrangement when it deems necessary.
The assumption of the project is that you are now working for a company which plans to enter a foreign market and asks you to develop a business plan for the overseas business expansion. The company's information should be accessible on internet. You are advised to choose a company in an industry that you are familiar with or an industry where you plan to work after your MBA study. You must discuss your chosen company and chosen foreign market with your Class Tutor (see page 6 for contact detail of your Class Tutor). You must choose a foreign country market that the company HAS NOT entered yet. You may find the GlobeEDGE website useful in searching for information about the target country market:
The proposal should be
approximately 1,500 words in length. Word count needs to be identified on the first page. Also, the first page should include 1) the names and student IDs of all team members; 2) your Class number (see page 6 for your Class number).
Pages should be numbered. There should be a Table of Contents. An assignment cover sheet must be attached to the assignment.
The proposal should include 1) basic information of the chosen company and its current business model; 2) comparison of three new potential country markets and your choice of the market for the company to enter; 3) SWOT analysis; 4) proposed strategy; and 5) proposed entry mode (if you choose exporting, you must supplement it with another entry mode); 6) a minimum of 10 references.
In Weeks 6-9, there is a simulation of Board meeting in class: your team are required to present the proposal of your business plan in class using powerpoint to the Board of Directors of your company, while other students and the instructors will act as members of the Board of Directors to provide feedback on your proposal. The duration of the presentation should be 8 minutes followed by questions & answers (Q&A). If your presentation exceeds the 8 minutes limit, your team may be requested to stop the presentation and submit a recording of your presentation after the class so that other teams can have time to present in class. You must save your powerpoint slides in a UsB before class and set up your powerpoint slides in classroom computer before your presentation. You need to respond to the comments and questions.
For external students, you can do the project individually (if you want to do it in team, please visit the General Discussion forum at the top of the LMS site to express your interest and find potential teammates). You must submit a written proposal of your business plan of approximately 1,500 words in Microsoft Word Format and a recording of your presentation via LMS - You can either submit a video-recording of your presentation OR your powerpoint slides with voice/camera over of 8 minutes in length via LMS no later than Friday, Week 5, 11pm. Your name, student ID and your Class number (see page 6 for your Class number) should be provided on the first page of your written proposal and the first slide of your powerpoint slide with voiceover (or in the beginning of your video recording). Please note: Internal students who would like to do the proposal presentation via recording (not in class) as external students do due to exceptional circumstances, you must get approval from the Unit coordinator and Class tutor and, after approval, follow the requirements outlined above for external students. You must however come to the class to participate in the simulation of Board meeting as a member of the Board to provide your comments to the presenters.
