Scenario: University Hospital has a very busy obstetrical unit, with dozens of nurses, secretaries, technicians, dietary staff, surgeons, midwives, and others traveling the halls. Employees must wear badges.
Security has just informed you that a newborn was abducted. An individual posing as an employee in scrubs came into the mother's room and informed her she needed to take the infant for an exam by the physician.
The employee appeared legitimate, and the mother complied. A few hours later when the mother inquired about her child, the staff knew nothing about physician tests. Security was immediately notified and the police called.
The facility is in "lock down".
Q1: Describe a plan with at least 5 main points to prevent this abduction from happening in the future. Identify a list of at least 5 individuals or roles that would be needed to train on this plan. Suggest at least one limit of the plan and how to ensure that risk is diminished. Do not merely propose expensive options like guarded security gates, and cameras all over the place. These expensive ideas will get shot down.
Scenario: Your facility just announced (without risk management's knowledge) that they just partnered with The University, an out of state teaching medical center. This center evaluates stroke patients remotely through telemedicine technology by specialists at The University. Yesterday the camera and audio link failed, and the patient had a massive stroke and now has a poor prognosis. The family is threatening to sue.
Q2: Research the law as it applies to Telemedicine in your State. Briefly describe. Then suggest at least two special risks and two benefits associated with Telemedicine. As a risk manager, suggest at least 2 ways to mitigate the risk associated with Telemedicine
Q3. What lessons can we learn from government sponsored programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and the VA System about the problems facing fixed-budget health care systems? How do these differ from private sponsored insurance? Which system (government only, private only or mixture of government & private) would you recommend for the delivery of health services in the USA? If you have other options, you may discuss those also.
