Exercise 2.113
Computer anxiety is defined as "the mixture of fear, apprehension, and hope that people feel when planning to interact, or when interacting with a computer." Researchers have found computer anxiety in people at all levels of society, including students, doctors, lawyers, secretaries, managers, and college professors. One profession for which little is known about the level and impact of computer anxiety is secondary technical education (STE).The extent of computer anxiety among STE teachers was investigated in the Journal of Studies in Technical Careers (Vol. 15, 1995). A sample of 116 teachers were administered the Computer Anxiety Scale (COMPAS) designed to measure level of computer anxiety. Scores, ranging from 10 to 50, were categorized as follows: very anxious (37-50); anxiousltense (33-36); some mild anxiety (27-32); generally relaxed/comfortable (20-26); very relaxed/confident (10-19). A summary of the COMPAS anxiety levels for the sample is provided in the table at the bottom of the page.
a. Graph and interpret the results.
b. One of the objectives of the research is to compare the computer anxiety levels of male and female STE teachers. Use the summary information in the table below to make the comparison.
