Odors in wastewater are caused chiefly by the products of the anaerobic reduction of organic nitrogen and sulfur-containing compounds. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a major component of wastewater odors. Oxidation with chlorine is one method of removing odors and it has the added benefit of killing the microorganisms responsible for the generation of H2S in the first place. As a specific example, HOCl reacts with H2S as follows in low pH solutions
HOCl + H2S <--> S + HCl + H2O
If the actual plant practice calls for 100% excess HOCl (to make sure of the destruction ofH2S because of the reaction of HOCl with other substances), what volume of HOCl (5 wt% solution) must be added to 1 L of a solution containing 50 ppm H2S? You may assume that the density of the HOCl solution and the solution containing H2S are the same as water.
How would the value of molecular weight be affected if all of the liquid is not vaporized. Explain
What volume in mL of 2.00 M sodium bicarbonate solution is needed to neutralize 25.0 mL of 4.00 M HCl?
If you start with 5.00g Cu(s) what would the theoretical yield of copper (I) oxide. If the reaction isn't very efficient and only has a 26% yield, how many grams of copper(I) oxide would actually be produced
The Haber-Bosch process is a very important industrial process. In the Haber-Bosch process, hydrogen gas reacts with nitrogen gas to produce ammonia according to the equation 3H2(g)+N2(g)--->2NH3(g)
Calculate the pH of the solution resulting from the addition of 20 mL of 0.10 M NaOH to 100 mL of 0.10 M HCN (Ka = 4.9x10^(-10))
How much PV work is done in kilojoules and what is the value of ^E in kilojoules for the reaction of 6.50g of acetylene at atmospheric pressure if the volume change is -2.80L
Lewis Bases given their lone pairs on the central atoms, however, none of them actually are. Why are OF2 and SF4 are strong Lewis Acids and not Lewis Bases
For each of the following salt solutions, indicate whether the solution will be acidic, basic or neutral.Then using data given below, calculate [OH-] or [H3O+] and pH for each solution.
Two liquids, A and B, show partial miscibility below 52.4 C. The critical concentration at the upper critical temperature is x=0.459, where x is the mole fraction of A. At 40.0 C the two solutions in the equilibrium have x=0.22 and x=0.60, respect..
Glycerol, C3H8O3, is used as a moistening agent for candy and is the starting material for nitroglycerin. Calculate the mass of a single glycerol molecule in grams.
If an unknown crystalline organic compound has a heat of melting that is 8.605 kJ/mole and a melting point of 250.6 C
