A company makes use of a computerised flat file information retrieval and storage system. The company is experiencing problems due to the use of this flat file system and decides to convert to relational database systems. Currently, there are three files in use: customer, stock and orders. Examples from the three files are shown below. During conversion to a relational database system, these files could need to be normalised into relations. Normalise these files up to third normal form.
Please show your process. But there should be a clear section at the end just for your final relation schemas for the entire database.
Note: In the normalization process, the data should be carefully studied to figure out the functional dependencies. If something is unclear, DB designer should consult with the customer. For this assignment, think about the functional dependencies (FDs) based on keys. Do not make unreasonable assumptions about FDs. For example, City ->PostCode is an example of unreasonable assumption.
What advantage is there in storing metadata in tables? Is Microsoft Access a DBMS? Why or why not? List the several consequences of a poorly designed database.
Describe relationships with example. Also illustrate degree of relationship for that example. What do you mean by locks. Write dow a binary lock function.
Create tables in 3NF. As you create the database, include different codes for at least three of the fields. Use sample data to populate fields for at least three records in each table.
Several times, database triggers are utilized to record logins by users. Here is the example of login trigger that inserts row into table every time a user connects.
