A bacterium isolated from a soil culture can consume ( C5H10O5 )ribose as a sole source of C when grown anaerobically. Experiments show that in the anaerobic pathways leading to Adenosine tri phosphate production, 3 molecules of ribose are converted to 5 molecules of carbon dioxide and 5 molecules of C2H5OH. These organisms also utilize ribose for the production of NADPH. The assimilation of ribose starts with its conversion to ribose 5-phosphate, with Adenosine tri phosphate serving as a phosphoryl donor. Explain how ( C5H10O5 )ribose can be converted to carbon dioxide and C2H5OH under anaerobic conditions. Write the overall reaction, showing how much ATP (Adenosine tri phosphate) can be produced per pentose used also write an equation for the generation of NADPH using ribose as a sole source of carbon?
