1. (a) A 0.3 Kg ball moving in the positive x-axis direction at 20 m/s is hit by a bat. Its final velocity is 25 m/s in the negative x-axis direction. The bat acts on the ball for 0.02 seconds. Find the average force F exerted on the ball by the bat.

(b) A 20g bullet moving at 200 m/s passes through a 3 cm thick sheet of plastic and emerges with a speed of 80 m/s. What average force impeded its motion through the plastic?

2. A block of wood of mass 3.5 Kg suspended by a wire of negligible mass. A bullet of mass 0.02 Kg is fired with a speed of Vi. Just after the bullet collides with wood, the block of wood with a bullet in it moves with speed of Vf and swings to a maximum height of 0.7m above the initial position.

(a) Calculate the speed final velocity (Vf) of the block of wood with a bullet in it
(b) Calculate the speed of the bullet

3. For the data given in the figure below, use momentum conservation to determine the magnitude and direction of the velocity of ball m1 after the collision.

4. A bomb of mass M at rest explodes into three pieces. Half of its mass M/2 travels in the positive x-axis direction with speed of V0 and another piece of mass M/3 travels with a speed of 2V0 at an angle of 530 above the horizontal. Find the velocity of the third piece whose mass is M/6.
