This assessment task is designed to increase your awareness of the effect communication has on the safety and quality of consumers experiences with the healthcare system. Using your understanding of the interpersonal communication literature and the communicating quality and safety in health care literature, you are required to complete an analysis of a consumers experience with the healthcare system. You are expected to support all components of your discussion with references from the literature.
This assessment will allow students to examine more thoroughly the literature on interpersonal communication and apply the literature to an analysis of an interview. It will also allow students to critique an experience a consumer has had with the health care system in a particular area of interest.
Task - Student's will view a video outside of class time and critique the interview against the interpersonal communication literature. Five videos will be provided and students will choose one in an area of particular interest to them.
Students are required to individually critique an interview via YouTube, located in UTSOnline.
Students will select one interview in an area of particular interest to them from 5 interviews which will be provided to them. Videos will be viewed outside of class time.
Students will prepare and submit a written critique of the interview integrated with the interpersonal communication literature. This task will be completed as an individual task. Students are advised to carefully read the marking criteria for the assessment to see the criteria they are required to address for this assessment. The major focus of the assessment is to critique the interaction/s the consumer in the video has with the health care system. You will need to listen carefully to the recount of the experiences and critique them against the communication literature. Particular attention needs to be given to how the interaction with the healthcare system might influence the quality and safety for the consumer. Students will also be required to analyse the communication skills of the interviewer from the video but the main focus is on the story the consumer tells. There is a wealth of material related to interviewing skills and you will be expected to demonstrate that you have read and understood this in order to provide comment on the skills you see when the interviewer interviews the consumer. The focus however is on the experiences the consumer recounts of their interaction's with the healthcare system.
Finally in this assessment students are asked to reflect on their own communication skills and analyse their strengths and weaknesses and suggest communication skills that may need to be further developed for students personal and professional growth. The Johari Window is a useful place to start considering your own communication. The word limit for this last section of the assessment is approx. 250 words.
