Assignment : Briefing document
Background
The 17 United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), agreed and ratified by 193 Members of the UN in 2015, gives blueprint for building a sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges of poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice and aim to do so in an inclusive way that leaves no one behind. All nations, developed and developing, have committed to tackling these global challenges by 2030. The challenge is enormous, and each country is at a different stage in their journey towards sustainability. Developed countries have pledged to assist the least developed countries in the world to meet these targets by mobilising funds and agreeing sustainable financing solutions. All countries still have a lot of work to do if these global aims are to be achieved by 2030.
The assignment
1. Choose ONE of the following SDGs:
Goal 2: Zero hunger, relating to food Goal 6: Clean water and sanitation Goal 7: Affordable and clean energy
Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production Goal 13: Climate action, relating to climate change
Goal 14: Life below water, relating to marine and aquatic biodiversity Goal 15: Life on land, relating to terrestrial biodiversity
2. Choose a country to use as a case study.
3. Prepare a scientific poster about the UN Sustainable Development Goals for a scientifically educated and informed audience. Use the SDG you have chosen from the list above, and the country you have selected as a case study. Your poster should:
a. First explain the concept of SDGs, what the SDGs are and why they are useful. Explain the problems/benefits of the SDGs in driving forward progress towards global sustainability.
b. Then discuss how your chosen SDG guides policy and implementation in the country you have selected.
c. Identify any successful policies that have been implemented in your chosen country that have moved the country closer to achieving the chosen SDG. Explain why these policies were successful.
d. Your poster should also identify the policy challenges your chosen country faces in tackling and implementing the SDG and suggest ways these might be overcome.
e. Cite references after the poster on a second page - these do not count towards the word limit.
Other considerations
1. You can submit a draft of your poster for feedback. The draft should give an indication of what you will cover and can be in any format - notes and bullet points are fine. The deadline for drafts is Tuesday 15th March at 23.00. Drafts must be submitted via StudyNet. Feedback will be released a few days later, also via StudyNet.
2. The word limit for the poster is 500 words, excluding references.
3. Remember this is NOT an essay, it is a POSTER. The poster should be eye catching so consider how you can use graphs, charts, diagrams, tables, bullet points and text to convey your key messages in a clear and concise way.
4. The clarity of the message is important. Make sure you consider your audience.
5. The poster itself must be one side of A4. References should be listed on the second page. The two-page document should be submitted to StudyNet as a pdf file.
