Assignment Brief:

Background: The flow around a cylinder has been widely studied at a full range of Reynolds numbers, investigating the coefficient of drag the pressure distribution and the separation points.

Aim: To investigate some aspects of computational fluid dynamics by using commercial CFD software to model flow over a smooth circular cylinder. To foster the development of investigative skills, critical thinking, and the communication of scientific results.

Objective: Learn the process of creating computational model i.e. selecting domain, mesh size and applying boundary conditions and numerical simulating the flow. Explore post processing for analysing the results. Formulate concise report.

Design test cases to study: You should start with a 2-D cylinder, choosing the diameter and fluid propertiesthen set the inlet velocity boundary condition to give Reynolds number for very low laminar of 10 or less, laminar flow of 10,000 to 100,000 and turbulent flow of 1,000,000. (1) Mesh independency check. (2) Comparison of coefficient of drag at the different Reynolds numbers to published case studies. (3) Comparison of pressure distribution and separation point to published case studies.

Report: Write up the assignment as you would write a journal paper. (No title page, single line 12 pt times Roman, 12 pages/3,000 words, abstract, figures embedded, references).
