Task:

Learning Outcome 1: Understand the science behind the structure of materials from micro to macro and how this affects the in service properties of the materials and the manufacturing routes used to achieve a product.

Learning Outcome 2: To make informed decisions about manufacturing route choice related to the materials and service conditions of parts and structures related to a wide range of engineering applications and consider environmental aspects of such choices.

Learning Outcome 3: Analyse the range of forces, loads and conditions in service materials will undergo in practice

Learning Outcome 4: Diagnose causes of failure in materials and the inherent mechanism that cause this and understand how material properties can be manipulated to lessen these effects.

Assignment Brief

Choose a component of a product related to your course of study i.e. Aerospace, Mechanical and undertake a full analysis related to materials and manufacturing processes for this component.

Use the following questions as an outline. (Discuss your choice with the tutor first).

1. Analyse and describe what the products function is.

2. Describe the applied loads and forces acting on the product including any environmental effects. i.e. stress regimes, corrosive environment, elevated temperature, commenting on any material microstructural aspects that may need to be considered

3. What are the materials specifications and why were they chosen in relation to their structure and properties?

4. Describe the full manufacturing operational route for the product commenting on why this route is used.

5. Consider an alternative material/ process combination that could be used for the part outlining any advantages that may be gained, particularly sustainability.

6. General report aspects layout and referencing.

There should be evidence of appropriate theoretical and commercial background research related to the assignment.
