Assignment - Yacht Auxiliary Power - Design
The aims of this module are to enable students to...
• * understand top level integrated system design for a product;
• * experience the process of system design.
Learning Outcomes
• * describe how products with various combinations of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic systems, interact together to become a top level system design;
• * explain how the top level integrated system design affects and relates to the detail design of the product.
Skills and Attributes
• produce a top level integrated system design for a product which may contain various combinations of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic systems;
• * present the product user inputs and system outputs, and the need for system feedback and user control.
System Design Assignment
Title: Electrical Power Generation on a Sailing Yacht
Brief: Individually,you are to providethe initial system feasibility and selection of a small power plant to provide auxiliary electrical power to an Ocean going sailing yacht.
The sailing yacht's main propulsion system is via its large sails, however it has a main engine power plant for maneuvering the yacht in and out of marinas, or when the wind is becalmed, and the yacht has no forward propulsion.
When the yacht is moored in the marina, and for rich millionaires, that is in Monaco, most of the year, the main engines cannot be used for the day to day powering of the living quarters in these luxury yachts at anchor. Your mission is to select the most appropriate electrical generating system, that will provide the electrical power to the cabin and crew living quarters on a daily basis.
Below is a few links to some of the background information.
The yacht, that your system is to fit into, is a large 53 metre ocean going craft, that can seat up to 12 crew, or family. You need to perform some basic background research to determine the power requirements for 12 people living full time in a 53 metre yacht.
There are a few main candidate systems to consider:
1)Petrol/Diesel Electric generators
2)Wind turbine/ Solar Power combined generation set.
3)Small Gas Turbine ( similar to Boeing 747 Auxiliary Power unit)
4)Fuel Cell Generation Set.
Each system choice must meet the daily electrical power requirements as shown in the online article: eoceanic
