Assignment - Discrete material
Question 1: An automated storage/retrieval system installed in a warehouse has five aisles. The storage racks in each aisle are 40 ft high and 160 ft long. The S/R machine for each aisle travels at a horizontal speed of 288 + PQ ft/min and a vertical speed of 44 + P ft/min. The pick and deposit time = 0.2 +(Q/100) min. Assume that the number of single command cycles/hr is twice to the number of dual command cycles/hr and that the system operates at (70 + P) % utilization.
Determine the throughput rate (loads moved/hr) of the AS/RS.
Question 2: An AGVS (Automated Guided Vehicles) will be used to satisfy the material flows indicated in the from-to chart in Table 1 below, which shows deliveries per hour between stations (before the slash) and distances in meters between stations (after the slash). Moves indicated by "L" are trips in which the vehicle is loaded, while "E" indicates moves in which the vehicle is empty. It is assumed that availability = 0.7+ (PQ/1000), traffic factor = 0.83+ (Q/100), and efficiency = 0.9. Speed of an AGV = 1+ (QP/100) m/s.
If load handling time per delivery cycle = 1.0 +(PQ/1000) min, determine the number of vehicles needed to satisfy the indicated deliveries per hour. NA means "Not Available".

A random variable X has density function f(x) = CX^2 1
While designing a shock absorbing bumper for a 5-Mg rail car, the spring used for the bumper follows a nonlinear relationship of F = ks2 where F is the force in Newtons and s is the compression distance in meters.
Use the same numerical values for the tensile load in each rod and the rod's diameter, and compare the stress in each rod.
Find the magnitude and depth of the point of application of the force on the circular gate shown (circular gate at an angle of 60 deg.) if h(distance from top of gate to top of water)=5ft. and D(length of the gate)=4 ft.
Air is expanded in a nozzle from a stagnation state of 2 MPa, 600 K, to a back pressure of 1.9 MPa. If the exit cross-sectional area is 0.003 m2, find the mass flow rate.
Determine the pH of water in a closed Calcium Carbonate Aquifer. Assume that the temperature is again 25oC, and that the aquifer material is pure Calcium Carbonate. Again you must list all species that exist in the system and all equations.
Model tests are to be performed to study the flow through a large check valve having an inlet diameter of 2 feet and a volume flowrate Qp of 30 cfs. The working fluid in the model is water at the same temperature as that in the prototype.
a bar of the cross section is shown in figure 3 and is made of steel that is assumed to be elastoplastic
The nozzle has a throat diameter of 2 cm and discharges into a large chamber maintained at a pressure of 100 kPa. Calculate the flow rate of nitrogen in kg/s for these conditions and its uncertainty.
A gunite concrete trapezoidal channel with 1:2 side slopes, as ilustrated below, conveys 60 m3/s on a slope of 0.0005. Compute the depth of flow.
An open channel with a trapezoidal configuration with side batters 1V:3H is to be designed to carry 1.0m^3/s with a bedslope of 0.0065. The channel is lined with concrete with manning's n of 0.011. Find the most efficient cross section.
A car is traveling up a 3% grade on a road that has good, wet pavement. The engine is running at 2500 rpm. The radius of the wheels is 15 inches, the driveline slipage is 3% and the overall gear reduction ratio is 2.5 to 1
