Assignment - Development of an area in Amman City
Learning Outcome 1: Identify the different mechanical properties of different structural materials and to choose the best option for a specific given application.

Learning Outcome 3: Present a site safety plan, risk assessment and method statement for a given civil engineering activity
Learning Outcome 4: Evaluate a given civil engineering infrastructure problem and prepare a concept design proposal for a project to solve the problem.
Assignment One: Part one
Scenario:
You are working as a civil engineer in a constructing company. The company has been awarded a tender for an infrastructure project located in Western Amman. The project consists of two stages: The first one is establishing a number of single story below ground reservoir pumping station and a water distribution network to serve a greenfield with an area of (5 Km2) near Dabouq Water Tank, the soil report states that the water table is 3 m deep, the soil is cohesionless and the strong soil strata is located at depth of 6 m in a part of the land plot and it remains cohesionless in another part A note in the tender agenda also stated that some projects in the neighbourhood were delayed due to the ground water issue.
The second stage is constructing a new highway between Dabouq Water Tank and HTU. As a part of the engineering team who is working on the project, the project manager assigned you the following tasks:
Task 1: Establishing Single Storey Below Ground Reservoir Pumping Station and a water distribution network (project profile)
As part of the planning process, you have been asked to compile a project profile for the excavations, earthworks and groundwater control to establish a RC pump station with a deep trench RC service duct. To serve the greenfield development a water distribution network is to be constructed to supply an adjacent local community with drinking water supply as well.
The water supply network will consider main and lateral pipes, valves, and fittings as shown in Figure 1.
Assignment One: Part Two
Task 2: Prepare a design proposal for a new highway that connects between Dabouq Water Tank and HTU. The highway is supposed to be bituminous, two-lane roadway that will serve surrounding community and facilitate the mobility between Dabouq Water Tank and HTU's students and staff. Use google earth maps to select the best route option.
1. Describe methods and techniques used generally in highway design
2. Develop a civil engineering design proposal for the new highway project that should include:
- A description of the method you used in developing this concept design, provide proper justification for using this method.
- Analysis of the project conditions (come out with a schematic design for the pavement layers according to the given geotechnical parameters)
3. what are the techniques that can be used in implementing your idea (describe the construction techniques, equipments and resources)
Task 3: Health and Safety Issues
You have been asked to compile a booklet explaining the roles and responsibilities of those involved in the construction of either of the projects outlined above.
1. Identify the hazards, risks and safety arrangements for excavations, working in confined spaces, working on structures and for working within temporary works on highways.
2. Develop and present a site safety plan, risk assessments and method statements for the hazards identified previously (always provide proper justification). you need to rely on the health & safety legislation and codes of practice related to civil engineering sites. (Show thorough discussion for these provisions)
