PART A - Bi-Cultural Partnerships
Introduction - In national government, local government and commercial businesses, Aotearoa New Zealand has established a number of unique models of governance and commercial practices. Many of these have arisen since Iwi have received their Treaty of Waitangi settlements. These models include partnerships with commercial partners from Japan and China, as well as Pakeha New Zealand.
Part A will require you to investigate and create a visual poster on the history and activities of Sealord International and Moana New Zealand. Sealord International is a major fisheries company. Moana New Zealand is the largest Maori-owned fisheries company in New Zealand (Aotearoa) and owns a 50% share of Sealord.
The poster is to cover:
1. The establishment of the Maori Fishing Industry beginning in 1992 and the current bi-cultural model.
2. The ownership (shareholder) model of Sealord and Moana New Zealand. Include details of Moana's iwi collective partnership model.
3. The business organisation and operations of Sealord, covering its local and international fishing operations. Include the values of Sealord which underpin their fishing practices. 100 words
4. The challenges which face Sealord. This is to include fishing quotas, the political and legal aspects of fishing in New Zealand's Exclusive Economic Zone, and/or issues relating to environmental/sustainability/marine protection.
Why a visual poster?
There has been a significant shift in the way businesses are presenting and communicated information to their customers and employees. Visual information, combined with text, is becoming the normal means of communication. Infographics is a good example (a google search has 288,000,000 results). For business, the focus is increasingly on less-rather-than-more information.
Visual information and communication is evident in social media, where Facebook, Instagram and other platforms are exclusively visual.
Part A of this assignment picks up on this momentum, and your task is to create a one page A3 which will combine words / sketches / images. This is to be on sheets of 'butcher's paper' which will be given to your group.
This part of the assignment does not require you to be a talented artist. It does require you to think about the information you are presenting in your poster; discuss the important features of the acts; organise this into themes, and then create a visual /words poster.
There are some basic design rules to be applied to the assignment, and there are a number of links at the end of this document which you should access and read. Sources for the visual poster and visual learning resources will be discussed in class.
To assist you in this assessment, you should access sources identified below. You may also wish to access visual learning websites. These sources are to be included as an appendix to this assignment, and submitted with appropriate referencing.
