101644: Community Management and Organisations
ASSESSMENT
The following information is designed to aid you in your understanding about the final assessment.
Title: "Individual Report/Typology — A critical comparison via use of a Typology of three small-medium sized Community Service Organisations (CSOs)
Length: 1200 words
Compare and contrast the Board ('governance') and/or Management ('approach') of any three (3) already existing Community Service Organisations (small-medium in size) of your choice (within the Typology).
Essential Elements:
a) Within the Typology the student is required to compile data that assesses what knowledge/gaps can be located/not located about these organisations. The Typology is to be no more than 500 words.
b) The use of a -typology" (or grid) as a clear and concise visual summary of three (3) characteristics which allows for compare/contrast between the differences and similarities in the Board ("governance') and/or Management ('approach) of each organisation. The number of aspects must not be less than or more than three (3).
c) A critical discussion of the material summarised in the typology/grid (via reference to essential literature and other appropriate resources), as well as;
d) A discussion of how each organisation seeks to demonstrate their "effectiveness" in each of the supplied characteristics (via reference to the essential literature and other appropriate resources).
Firstly, think of an organisation you have come across in your study so far.
a. What does the organisation do?
b. What are the frameworks/approaches used for practice?
C. What is said about these things in public documents, Websites; Annual Reports; StrategiC Plans; the organisation's submissions to 'Inquiries' (usually Government 'Inquiries' or 'Bodies' like the Senate) etc.?
d. How does the organisation demonstrate effectiveness i.e, how do they show that they are doing good work? (This is often formally required in their funding agreements -- some may use RBA, some may document case studies, some may use publicity and/or statistics etc.)
C. How would you arrange these pieces of information in an ordered way?
Once you have one organisation in mind, you need to think about what other organisations you might compare this to? This can be done in different ways:
All 3 are from the same sub-sector: e.g. 'Disability'; 'Youth'; 'Women'; 'Aged' etc.
b. All 3 are from different sub-sectors, but share a `link'; e.g. `Mental Health' & 'Drug & Alcohol abuse' & 'Youth Homelessness'
c. By geographic location: e.g. Rural vs. Regional vs. Metropolitan etc. or Central Sydney vs.Western Sydney vs. South-Western Sydney
d. By size: e.g. small; small-medium; medium
e. By 'Life Cycle Theory', an approach based on 'developmental stages', namely: Birth (often dominated by a founding figure); Youth (characterised by a clash between old & new approaches); Adulthood (clear 'mission' roles, hierarchies and boundaries): Maturity (*Good' connections, but a loss of motivation and entrepreneurial spirit); Decline.
