Zener Diode I-V Characteristics

The ability to control itself can be used to great extent to stabilize a voltage source against the load variations. The fact that the voltage across diode in the breakdown region is nearly constant turns out to be a significant application of the zener diode as a voltage regulator. The function of a regulator is to give a constant output voltage to a load connected in the parallel with it instead of the ripples in supply voltage or variation in the load current and the zener diode will continue to regulate the voltage until diodes current falls below the minimum I_Z(min) value in the reverse breakdown region.
