What is an aglet:
An aglet is an autonomous mobile agent, which is able to move from one computer to another computer carrying along with itself state information and executable code. On arrival at another computer it is able to run itself and carry out whatever task it was designed to do and then, if necessary, move to another computer spawning copies of itself if needed.
The term agent is used in many ways but the general sense intended here is a piece of software that 'helps somebody do something', such as find the best price for an item on the internet. The key feature about aglets though is that both the state and the code are mobile. They are autonomous in the sense that once released with a task to carry out they are able to decide where they will go. They are able to interact with the server that they are currently running on and with other aglets. They can halt their execution on one server, travel across a network and then resume execution on another server with their state information and code intact.
Aglets have been described as a development of the object-oriented programming paradigm in that as well as an object having state, behaviour and identity, it also has location. With aglets, executable content is moved across a network and can be regarded as a distributed object that is able to move.
While still largely developmental there are a number of toolkits for the creation of aglets, one of the most popular being IBM's Aglets Workbench. This contains its own agent APIs for creating Java-based mobile agent applications.
