Physical Layer
Physical layer is concerned with transmitting raw bits on a communication medium. The design issues have to do with making sure that when one end sends a 1 bit, it is received by the other end as 1 bit and not as 0 bit or vice-versa. In physical layer we deal with the communication channel used for transmission.
Types of Medium
Medium can be divided into 2 categories.
1. Guided Media: Guided media means that signals is guided by the presence of physical media that is signals are under control and remains in the physical wire. Like copper wire.
2. Unguided Media: Unguided Media means that there is no physical path for the signal to propagate. Unguided media are basically electro-magnetic waves or signal. There is no control on flow of signal. For eg. RF waves.
