WAN refers to a computer network spanning a regional, national, or global area. These networks connect numerous small networks like the local area networks or the metropolitan area networks. WANs have a local access number, called point of presence (POP), and long distance trunk lines, called backbones.
Point of Presence (POP)
A Point of Presence generally refers to a city or a location where one network can be connected to another. It is a point at which a line from the IXC is connected with the line from the local telephone company or to the user in the absence of a telephone company.
WANs make a point of presence available in as many towns and cities as possible so as to carry computer data over long distances. A WAN called Tymnet, for instance, has over 1,000 points of presence in the US. Point of presence allows customers to access the WAN by means of a local analog telephone call (using a modem) or a direct digital connection.
Backbones
The backbone carries the most traffic on the communications network. It is also used for joining the LANs together (either within a building or across a city or a country). LANs are connected to the backbone through bridges and/or routers. The backbone serves as a communication highway for LAN-to-LAN traffic.
Uses of WAN
LAN-to-LAN connections
A major limitation of a LAN is its inability to link computers at diverse geographical locations. To overcome this limitation, a WAN can be used for connecting LANs at two or more geographically separated locations.
Acquiring transactions
Through a WAN, information about a transaction can be instantly transmitted to control computers. When a transaction occurs, the point of sale terminal is linked to a data communication network and the acquired data is collected for recording purposes. This data can also be put through further analysis in order to determine the changing patterns of sales.
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is used for setting standards for B2B transactions and to speed up the process of ordering, invoicing, and payments. If two companies have compatible systems, connections can be established between them through EDI. For instance, company A can send a purchase order to company B by means of an EDI. They can either communicate directly with each other or take the help of an intermediary EDI company.
