Statics:
Resultant Force:
If 2 or more forces P, Q, S,... are acting upon a rigid body and if a single force, R, can be found whose effect upon body is the same as that of forces P, Q, S, ... this single force R is called as resultant of the other forces.
Resultant of forces acting in same direction (in the same straight line) is equal to their sum.
LAW OF PARALLELOGRAM OF FORCES
If 2 forces, which are acting at a point, are represented in magnitude and direction by the 2 sides of a parallelogram drawn from one of its angular points, their resultant is represented both in the magnitude and direction by diagonal of parallelogram passing through the angular point.
Magnitude and Direction of the Resultant of TheTwo Forces:
Assume that OA and OB represent the forces P and Q acting at a point O and inclined to each other at an angle a then resultant R and direction 'q' can be given by
and
Case (i): If P = Q, then tanθ = tan (α/2) => θ = α/2
Case (ii): If the forces act at the right angles, so that α = 90°, we have
