Source Routing
Source routing is like in concept to virtual circuit routing. It is implemented as beneath:
- primarily, a path among nodes wishing to speak is found out, either by flooding or by any other suitable process.
- This route is then specified in the header of every packet routed among these two nodes. A route may also be specified to some extent, or in terms of a few intermediate hops.
Advantages:
- Bridges do not need to look up their routing tables since the path is already specified in the packet itself.
- The throughput of the bridges is superior, and this could lead to improved utilization of bandwidth, once a route is established.
Disadvantages:
- Establishing the route at 1st needs an expensive search means like flooding.
- To cope up with dynamic relocation of nodes in a network, common updates of tables are necessary, else all packets would be sent in wrong direction. This is also expensive.
