Signal Diode Arrays
When the space is limited, or matching pairs of switching signal diodes are needed, diode arrays can be quite useful. They usually consist of low capacitance high speed silicon diodes like the 1N4148 connected together in the multiple diode packages called an array for use in the clamping and switching in digital circuits. They are encased in the single inline packages (SIP) having 4 or more diodes connected internally to give an individual isolated array, common cathode, (CC), or a common anode, (CA) configuration as shown below.
Signal diode arrays can be used in the digital and computer circuits to protect the high speed data lines or other input/output parallel ports against the electrostatic discharge, (generally represented as ESD) and voltage transients. By connecting two diodes in the series across the supply rails with data line connected to their junction as shown, any unwanted transients are rapidly dissipated and as the signal diodes are available in the 8-fold arrays they can protect eight data lines in the single package.
