Shutdown and Abandonment Costs

Shutdown costs are incurred when there is temporary cessation of business activity, which could be saved if production continues. They include sheltering of plant and equipment, layoff expenses etc. Abandonment costs are the cost of retiring a fixed asset from use. Permanent cessation of production raises the problem of disposal of assets.
