Probability:
Random Experiment
An experiment, all possible outcomes of which are known to us in advance but the outcome of any specific performance cannot predicted before completion of experiment, is called as random experiment. An instance of random experiment might be tossing of coin.
Sample-space
A set of all the possible outcomes associated with the same random experiment is called as sample space and is denoted by 'S' usually. Consider experiment of tossing a die. If we want numbers that shows on top face, then the sample space would be
S1 = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}
Event
An event is subset of the sample - space.
In any sample space we can be interested in occurrence of certain events instead of in occurrence of a specific element in sample space.
Simple Event
If an event is the set containing only one element of sample-space, then it is called as simple event.
Compound Event
A compound event is 1 which can be represented as a union of the sample points.
For example, the event of drawing heart from the deck of cards is subset A ={heart} of sample space S = {heart, spade, club, diamond}. Thus A is a simple event. None event B of drawing red card is a compound event as B = {heart U diamond} = {heart, diamond}.
