Peak Inverse Voltage
The Peak Inverse Voltage (PIV) or Maximum Reverse Voltage (VR (max)), is the maximum permitted Reverse operating voltage which can be applied across diode without reverse breakdown and damage to the device. This rating thus, is usually less than the "avalanche breakdown" level on reverse bias characteristic curve. Typical values of the VR (max) range from a few volts to thousands of volts and should be considered while replacing a diode.
The peak inverse voltage is a significant parameter and is basically used for rectifying diodes in the AC rectifier circuits with the reference to the amplitude of voltage were the sinusoidal waveform changes from the positive to a negative value on each cycle.
